Located between the continents of Africa and Asia (Middle East) is the Red Sea. The Red Sea is actually a saltwater inlet of the Indian Ocean which enters from the Gulf of Aden on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula and then leads all the way up to the Gulf of Suez on one side and the Gulf of Aqaba on the other.

My partner James and I had heard about the beautiful resort areas that exist in the Red Sea area of Egypt. Having an international reputation for being one of the best locations for snorkelling, diving and fishing, we were certainly keen to take a look.

In particular, we wanted to check out the Red Sea Riviera, the Arab Republic of Egypt which lies along the eastern coastline of the mainland. Just south of the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea Riviera comprises a number of resort towns and resorts dotted along the coast.

We were lucky enough to be based in the main centre of the Red Sea Riviera in the city of Hurghada.

From here we certainly had our pick of a large number of tours and charter boats that operate in and around the Red Sea.

Even from the beachfront resort we stayed at, we could see how beautiful the sea was. Although Hurghada is an extremely popular destination for holidaymakers from Europe in particular, it was so nice to see no evidence of pollution. This place is looked after very well.

Wikipedia sums this region up by saying: “The combination of a favourable climate, warm sea, thousands of kilometres of shoreline and abundant natural and archaeological points of interest makes this stretch of Egypt’s coastline a popular national and international tourist destination. There are numerous National Parks along the Red Sea Riviera, both underwater and on land. Desert and marine life are protected by a number of laws, and visitors may be subject to heavy fines for not abiding.”

Our first sea cruise from the Red Sea Riviera

Our first outing was aboard the ‘Happy Dolphin’. This cruiser had three large decks. The main deck is where you entered and also did swimming, SCUBA and snorkelling from. The top deck was a level up, from which you had a better overall view of the water and surrounds. And then there was the ‘submarine level’. This was a really neat area where passengers could observe marine life through windows beneath the surface of the sea.

I think the photos speak for themselves with respect to how beautiful the Red Sea is. It was extremely safe to enjoy the warm waters here, far out from shore. All the licensed tour operators here all have qualified staff who know the area and look after the guests well.

Dolphin watch

On another day, we were on a different charter boat which went much further out and also passed some lovely islands. The ‘Rayan 1’ was also a very nice boat that started out in search of dolphins. In the course of doing this, our boat joined with a number of others who all congregated around a spot where dolphins usually show up at a certain time in the morning.

As you can see, the dolphins did show up, much to the delight of excited onlookers. Many tourists got excited and jumped off the various boats in an attempt to swim with the dolphins. We opted to not try this and instead enjoyed watching the dolphins tease the tourists who had absolutely no chance of catching up with them!

Touring around the Red Sea

The waters here are among the best I have ever seen. So clear, clean and pristine.

The spots we were taken to for some time in the beautiful warm water was so idyllic, it is hard to describe how fabulous and unspoilt this region is.

Below are some of the photos shared in an effort to convey the look and feel of the Red Sea.

Islands in the Red Sea

Many people travel to spend time on some really beautiful islands situated here.

Two in particular that we saw were Mahmya Island and Paradise Island. Wouldn’t you love to spend some of your vacation time enjoying these places?

Heading back to the Red Sea Riviera

Having enjoyed each outing on the Red Sea there is always the time when you have to head back to land again.

Approaching the shoreline of the Red Sea Riviera Egypt once more, I am reminded of just how beautiful this part of the world is.

A final thought

Egypt is rightfully renown the world over for its rich ancient historical sites which many of us dream of experiencing. There is no doubt that I enjoyed that remarkable aspect of this amazing country.

However, the word is also getting out more and more, about the natural beauty of places like the Red Sea Riviera and the wonderful Red Sea itself.

Although often overshadowed by Egypt’s more popular tourist sites, I found this region to be a real jewel in the crown of all that this country offers. I hope you would agree and plan time to explore Egypt’s natural beauty as much as any other aspect of this amazing land.

I just loved my time at the Red Sea Rivera Egypt and my experiences out on the Red Sea itself.

You have unveiled a totally different perspective of Egypt. One usually associates Egypt with the Pyramids and endless stretches of sand. The Red Sea Riviera is really so captivating. Getting close to the marine life from the submarine level must have been a really enchanting experience. Would love to experience scuba diving in these beautiful waters.

Thanks so much. I agree that the pyramids, the Nile and so many wonderful sites connected with ancient Egypt really overshadow other beautiful areas like the Red Sea Riviera. I’m so pleased you see this fabulous area as so worthy on its own. The word is definitely starting to spread about this facet of Egypt and I hope this continues. Thank you again for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Well, what an amazing destination. The colours of the water is so beautiful. Just to be able to go out in a boat and have dolphins surround you such a wonderful experience. I have heard of the Red Sea Riviera but never thought of visiting, this is now on our travel wish list. I may never leave, it looks so serene.

I know what you mean Jane and I must say we were quite surprised to meet quite a few people who travel to that spot each year from various places in Europe. That must say something about the place and the area has proven really attractive to people who scuba and snorkel. It really is such a beautiful spot.

The Red Sea is such a beautiful place and a paradise for snorkelers and divers. I have been to both Egypt, and Israel, and loved the sea life. Therefore it was so interesting to read about the Red Sea Riviera. I hope I get to visit again and enjoy the snorkelling there. I only wish they would make more effort to protect it.

Well I can only comment about the area of the Red Sea I saw from the Riviera in Egypt and I can say that the condition of water, beaches etc that I saw were all kept in great shape, Paula. I don’t recall seeing any pollution at all and I do hope you will be able to check this out as well if you visit in the future. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts.

I did visit Egypt many years ago and would love to visit it again specially the Red Sea riviera. As always the post is in depth and provides some great information. It does seem to be a snorkeling paradise with the marine life. I must admit the submarine boats to provide a great view and is becoming very popular tourist attractions in most places where there is marine life but I do feel a bit claustrophobic in these. The Hilton as always seems to be delivering the quality and hope you enjoyed your stay here . Some great pics adding life to your post again Nicole. Thanks for sharing the Red Sea Riviera.

Thank you for such a lovely comment Amar. I do get what you mean about feeling a bit claustrophobic in the confined space of the submarine viewing platform – but it was surprisingly quite spacious down there. The good thing is that the tour operator restricted the numbers of passengers on these trips so that it never felt crowded. All in all, it made for a wonderfully enjoyable time.

Definitely great waters you found at the Red Sea. I didn’t think of the Sea in conjunction with Egypt. I did get to go into the Red Sea waters in Israel. It was so salty that one is immediately afloat. I wonder if that is because it is close to the Dead Sea or the level of salt is also high in Egypt. Great post that gets me thinking about including it with an Egyptian visit!

I completely agree with you Cat. Pretty much everyone we met while we were there was very aware of how special the water was compared to most other places and therefore were appreciative and wanted it to stay that way. I think most tourists will be mindful in that way, but there will always be a need to be able to deal with people who don’t do the right thing – to make sure this beauty is protected.

We visited the Red Sea for great scuba diving. We were surprised how deserted the resort areas were when we were there. It looks like things were much more active when you visited. So cool that you did a tour out looking for dolphins. And that you found a small pod. Your pictures really make me want to plan a return visit. And stay at such a beautiful resort.

Hi Linda. Depending on when you visited, the lack of tourism numbers may have been due to violent incidents that created a massive fall in tourism all over the country. Tourism now is well up and continuing to climb as confidence builds. There are also high and low seasons like many locations to take into account. But absolutely this is a wonderful place for scuba diving. Thanks so much for your lovely comment.

Just as well we agree that appreciating natural beauty does not necessarily mean camping Suanlian! Having said that, you can actually go camping on certain tours in Egypt, experiencing this in the Sahara. While that wasn’t part of this trip, we certainly got to see so much natural beauty across Egypt – and the Red Sea Riviera definitely is one of those places. Great you liked it also and I’m sure your family would also love this resort area.

I have never gotten to take a boat out like the one you took. I never knew they had a submarine level where you can see ocean life under the sea. That is amazing too!

I bet it was a thrill to see the dolphins. We see them a lot where I live and it’s always a wonder every time. I particularly like it when we are surfing and they come up to swim around us. The thing is, we have to watch hard to make sure they are dolphins and not sharks. Once we see they are dolphins, we relax and enjoy.

Well Roamy, I visited in June this year (2019) and must say that I felt perfectly safe. I also met single women travelling there on holiday and their feedback was good as well. This is the 5th post I have published in a series on Egypt, with 2 to go. The final one is actually focussed on solo woman travel in Egypt and discusses a fair bit about safety – so you may want to stay tuned for that one. You’re not being a weakling, you’re just being cautious and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

You are so right, these photos do speak for themselves! The Red Sea is absolutely beautiful. This is something I would love to experience first hand, those waters are so clear and the coral reef looks like it would be lovely to view while snorkelling. I love how the boat had an underwater viewing deck – what an ingenious idea!

That underwater viewing deck sure was quite ingenious Lindsay! What was also good was the operators did not take too many passengers at once, so there was plenty of room for everyone to see the sights and enjoy themselves. Thank you very much for leaving such a lovely comment.

Well, the boat certainly floated Sonia, and the underwater deck of that boat (called the submarine level) was definitely a hit for passengers to see so much beautiful marine life there.

SO beautiful! I haven’t been to Egypt yet, but I have gone on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and would love to travel to other sites in this part of the world as well.

So the Red Sea is this beautiful?! I’ve always wanted to explore the Red Sea and oh my! You’ve gotten me all psyched up. The beaches by the Red Sea look even better than I always perceived. I’ve always thought of a dry beach with no life at all. I’m glad you’ve shown me its beauty. I love it!

I totally understand why so many people would not think of Egypt when it comes to such beautiful water, beaches, breezes and climate for holidaymakers. And yet there it is! I think it is due to the overwhelming presence of the Sahara for most of the country and that most people instantly think of the famous ancient sites, so the resort area along the Red Sea Riviera is not as broadly recognised. Thanks so much for such a lovely comment Dalene.

The Red Sea looks beautiful. I especially like the submarine level on the boat where you can see the fish under water. So cool!

That’s for sure Kelly! It gives a completely different and fascinating dimension. It is just a beautiful beneath the surface as it is looking from above the waves.

Naive as I am when it comes to that part of the world I would have thought of Egypt as a beach destination but the Red Sea is gorgeous! Dolphins may have been all I needed to see to make this trip perfect but add to it the boat with the cool views and the water! WOW. Great information on a place I had never heard of, The Red Sea Riviera!

I never knew about Red Sea but it really looks interesting because of its strategic location at the junction of Asia and Africa. Good to know that the Red Sea is a saltwater inlet of the Indian Ocean. The water is having perfect blue shades and I also loved the different hues of blue due to depths. It is good that you spotted so many dolphins and also marine life from the submarine. Even your cruise looks well maintained and comfortable. Those two islands – Mahmya Island and Paradise Island look beautiful.

This was such a fun glimpse into Egypt! I’ve never been, and I always just picture pyramids. I love how modern this area looks! The boat rides look fun, too. Love that you got to get up close and personal with the fish without even having to put on a bathing suit!

That’s so true Jennifer – although you do have the option to go swimming on these cruises and they also have snorkelling gear for you to use also. The amazing waters here are not as well known as they might be – as they are quite over-shadowed by the fantastic historical sites that Egypt is so famous for. But if in Egypt, it would be a shame not to experience the beauty of the Red Sea Riviera.

The resort looks great. Good to know that it has its own beach, its own slice of the red sea itself! That’s cool. I didn’t know that the Red Sea is an inlet of the Indian Ocean. Never bothered to see the map much in the region, I guess. haha.
The cruises look good. The seats are super comfortable. Good to know one of the boats had a ‘submarine’ level. But how was the clarity of water? Though sea-life is visible, it is as good as the depths?

The clarity of the water was simply amazing Bhushavali. At depths, you could see very clearly as well and while I tried to capture this, I am not that great a photographer to get the best settings etc. Nevertheless, if you love being out on the water, I would definitely recommend you take these cruise options while staying on the Red Sea Riviera.

I’ve only been to the Israeli side of the Red Sea, and now I want to visit the Egyptian side as well! That Happy Dolphin boat is amazing. I was not expecting the inside to look that nice, or for there to be a marine observation level. Adding that to my list for whenever I find myself on the Egyptian Red Sea Riviera!

I love the submarine-esque observation area. It reminds me of the submarine Finding Nemo ride at Disneyland. To be honest, I never really considered visiting Egypt as a snorkeling/underwater destination. I had no idea there was so much life around the red sea riviera. I can definitely understand why you would call it a real jewel!

What a gorgeous place! My husband is Egyptian and most of his family still lives there, but we haven’t visited as a family yet. This looks like an awesome place for snorkeling, one of my favorite things! You’re really making me want to visit Egypt now. Most people post photos of the desert, so it’s nice to see the other side.

If you love snorkelling Maggie, you will definitely love spending time on the Red Sea Riviera. The Red Sea is well known for its pristine diving and snorkelling spots. There are many beautiful locations across Egypt but many families in particular love to holiday here. I’m sure you and your family would love it, on top of being able to spend time with your husband’s family as well. Just more reasons to go and enjoy this wonderful place.

It’s amazing how many people are not familiar with the Red Sea region or that Egypt has a beautiful resort area all along the Red Sea Riviera, Kathy. This area is very well known by a lot of people living in Europe however. James and I met another couple from Germany at the resort for example and they told us that many Europeans go there every year – and that this was their 7th trip! We did notice a lot of northern Europeans in particular on holiday here.

That’s beautiful time spent at the Red Sea Riviera. The beachfront resort you stayed at is an ideal place to vacay. I would also definitely take cruises out the Red Sea, the best part of which is the submarine level to enjoy the ocean creatures. Lucky you to have seen the dolphins.

The Dolphins show up at that spot all the time Shreya, which is why the tourist boats go there. It was so lovely to watch them as they gracefully glided through the sea with what seemed to be effortless ease and it was great that we did get a couple of photos in the process. The cruises were very enjoyable on such beautifully clear water that allowed you to see an abundance of marine life.
