Essential camping products for women this year

By Samantha Rupp

While the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to most non-essential travel for 2020 and 2021, one form of relatively safe travel is camping. Being in wide-open spaces with limited people around means less contact with groups of people outside of your bubble. This past year, Americans took advantage of the great outdoors by taking day or weekend trips to semi-local parks and wilderness areas within driving distance.

If you’re getting tired of spending your days inside, working from home, and sheltering in place, camping can be a good outlet. As long as you follow state and local public health guidelines and social distance, camping should be a relatively low-risk endeavor. Before you hit the road, however, it’s important you go fully prepared. To ensure your weekend camping trip goes smoothly and comfortably, refer to this list of nine essential camping products for women.

1. Comfortable sleeping pad

Today, roughing it in the wilderness isn’t as tough as our ancestors. Thanks to modern technology and new inventions, spending time in nature doesn’t have to be as uncomfortable as it may sound. One of the top pieces of equipment you should invest in for camping is a comfortable sleeping pad. Depending on your itinerary, you’re most likely going to be spending most of your time hiking and exploring the area around you. The last thing you want is to be exhausted due to a lack of sleep. With a top-notch sleeping pad, you won’t feel rocks, roots, and hard earth between you every time you shift positions. Better yet, most sleeping pads are extremely lightweight and easy to pack, meaning they won’t weigh you down or take up precious cargo space.

2. A tent

Sleeping under the stars can be a magical experience, but when mosquitos and other pesky creatures attack you, the experience can be less than ideal. A function tent is a must when camping. As you look for the perfect tent for camping, there are a few features to keep in mind, such as:

  • How much space it provides
  • Whether it’s waterproof and windproof
  • Additional cubbies or pockets for storage
  • Ease of assembly
  • Weight and size

3. Toiletries

Going back to your roots and being one with nature might sound good in theory, but there’s a reason why humans invented common hygiene products, which is to maintain our health. While a blowdryer and full makeup kit aren’t necessary, there are some essential toiletry items you should pack to ensure a comfortable camping trip, such as:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Other toiletry essentials and medication (eg. If you use acne cream, bring it!
  • All-in-one soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s
  • Deodorant
  • Biodegradable wipes

4. Female-specific backpack

No two bodies are built the same. When it comes to unisex hiking backpacks, women are often put at a disadvantage because their body structure isn’t taken into consideration. A female-specific backpack will do your body wonders when traversing the backcountry, mountains, and meadows. Female-specific backpacks come with contoured shoulders and hip straps to ensure heavy luggage doesn’t weigh you down or cause soreness. There are also adjustable straps to ensure the backpack fits nice and snug for comfortable hiking. As you look for backpacks, make sure they come with enough storage to hold all of your belongings and equipment.

5. Sleeping bag

A lightweight sleeping bag is another must-have for a camping trip. While sleeping bags might seem like they’re one and the same, they can vary drastically. To get a comfortable night’s sleep, you want a sleeping bag that’s thermoregulating and can keep you warm on chilly nights and cool on hot nights. And if you plan to go hiking with a significant other, consider investing in a double sleeping bag that can fit both you and your partner comfortably. This is an absolute must when considering your own list of essential camping products for women.

6. Large water bottle

As you probably know, humans can only last about three days without water. That’s why packing a large water bottle that can keep you hydrated throughout your trip is essential. Depending on where you’re camping, you might not be near freshwater sources where you can easily refill your bottle every time you’re thirsty. A large water bottle that can hold plenty of ounces can help ensure you stay hydrated. It’s also worth investing in a hydration pack that you can carry on your pack and fuel yourself on the go, such as a CamelBak hydration pack.

7. Portable stove

After a day spent hiking, you’re going to return to your campsite pretty hungry. That’s where a portable stove comes in. Portable stoves can come in varying shapes and sizes, so it’s important to invest in one that you can store easily and cook the meals you intend on preparing. Along with a stove, you’ll have to make sure you bring enough propane to ignite a flame to cook your food.

8. Snacks

While you will mostly prepare your big meals at night back at the campsite, it’s important to stay fueled throughout the day while you hike. Along with lunch, such as a sandwich, it’s a good idea to be prepared with plenty of snacks. Some convenient, protein and nutrient-packed snacks you can bring on your journey include:

  • Granola bars
  • Hard fruits like apples, pears, and oranges
  • Jerky
  • Trail mix
  • Granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried fruit
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

These are just some of the different types of snacks you can bring on your adventure. Depending on your taste preferences and the amount of room in your backpack, you can bring more or larger snacks.

9. Personal protective equipment

Even after an entire year, the pandemic is still plaguing most of the world. While camping is a great way to stay socially distanced and away from others, it’s still possible to spread or catch the virus. To keep you and those around you safe, make sure to bring along PPE equipment, such as multiple masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Wrapping up

There’s nothing better than breathing in a big sigh of fresh air in the open wilderness. Disconnecting and spending time in nature is great for both your physical and mental health, which is much-needed during times like these. If you’re planning a camping trip in the future, make sure you bring along these nine essential camping products for women.

I think you’ve covered all the bases, now it’s just getting out there and experiencing it! I didn’t know there was specific backpacks made for women now. That’s great to know and improves the accessibility for women to embrace adventures that need a pack.

Loved your tips on what to carry for camping, especially for females. Sleeping pad that too which is very comfortable is really essential for me, as a good sleep during camping is highly needed after a long tiring day. Large water bottle and lots of snacks are another important thing which I would love to keep always in stock during camping.

Definitely essential! As someone who also loves camping, I’d go for all of these, especially the toiletries. Who can go outdoors without these thingies, right? The face towel is something that I always have with me. Not only is it handy, but it also keeps me fresh, clean, and fresh! And although I’m not a big fond of granola bars, I’d go for nuts as a to-go snack.

Thank you for this useful guide. It’s perfect for beginners like me. I’ve never gone camping on my own and would never have thought to find a female-specific backpack, for example. And I wouldn’t have known what food to bring.

You know – I thought I was the only one who felt that the unisex knapsacks did not feel right for me. Glad to see that I wasn’t wrong. A very well done list – makes a great ready reckoner for those heading out. And an amazing shopping list for anyone looking to start hiking.

Ooh! An all-in-one soap is a fab idea. I don’t really use one at home, but I think it’s a great idea for on the go. Healthy, nutrient-dense foods like the snacks you suggested are fab choices, too. I am so glad the weather is warmer for camping!

As someone with many, many years of experience camping, I have to say that the 4 top things for a comfortable night sleep are a comfortable sleeping pad, brilliant sleeping bag, safe and study tent as well as a pillow (self-inflating) or blanket that can become a pillow.

Definitely a large water bottle. Wherever we go, we always bring a water bottle because it’s so easy to get thirsty in our hot country. Snacks as well, love that the recommendations are healthy.

Just last weekend I went on a 4 days overnight camping and hiking trip. I wish I had read this post before that. I did not take a Comfortable sleeping pad and I know how hard it was for me during the night. The list of things that you have mentioned are definitely essentials. I will invest in a light sleeping pad and a sleeping bag for my next trip.

I think a portable stove is a great item to bring on a camping trip. That way, you don’t have to rely on a campfire to make your meals!

I like to carry some boiled sweets particularly if I’m on a long cycle or walk. I find the sweetness can really lift your mood particular if the weather isn’t great. Great article ????
