Make Sure Your Home Is Secure Pre-Holiday

One expense that travellers never expect to pay for are damages to their home. But according to former thieves, the majority of burglars will purposely look for properties that seem vacant, so take some steps to secure your home before you leave on holiday. If you have any scheduled deliveries, put them on pause for a bit. For example, if you subscribe to a meal delivery service, make sure you put your account on hold before leaving. There’s no sense in paying for items you won’t be using! Plus, thieves look for stacks of mail and packages that signal you’re away.

Additionally, there are ways to prepare your home to ensure you don’t come home to an expensive repair or surprise. For instance, since many seniors plan holidays in colder months, it makes sense to inspect your roof for any leaks that could lead to serious issues. But you should also take care to prepare the inside of your flat as well. Donate or get rid of food that will expire and try to limit buying perishable items before you go on holiday.

Many travellers are surprised to know that those discount travel sites can often charge excessive fees and make cancellations difficult should your plans change. So, make some time to call around to see if you can snag their cheapest lodging or tickets. Inquire about any senior travel discounts they may offer. For flights, if you’re savvy with your smartphone, you can download apps like Skyscanner to make getting your money’s worth much easier. Save When You Need to Rent a Car

Whether you’re going on holiday around the U.S. or need transport in another country, chances are you will need to rent a car at some point during your travels. The easiest way for seniors to save money on car rentals is to check around with various websites. But you should also be on the lookout for those sneaky extra fees. Car rental companies hide these costs on sites and may even try to push them on you when you pick your car up. Keep a copy of your rental confirmation with you and stay firm about the original costs. Of course, you may also consider planning a holiday to a destination where a car is not needed. Car-less camping is possible, though you may need to rely on a taxi or a ride-share service to get you to a campsite or trailhead. If you’re travelling in the U.S., stick to larger cities like New York or Washington, D.C. so you can walk about or use alternate, inexpensive modes of transportation to get around, such as the subway or train.

Some great tips here for saving money as a senior. I always forget to ask sites and monuments for discounts for the over 60’s. It is a good way to save money. We always check to see if museums have free entrance on particular days to also save money. Car hire companies are ‘sneaky’ arent they with their hidden charges.

I love this. I totally agree with the senior discounts. I always bring my grandma to avail 20% discounts on expensive restaurants. LOL.

A lot of your suggestions are something we can testify to benefiting from even though we’re not seniors. Booking directly with the hotel/airline is always preferable as cancellations or even rescheduling can be very expensive if done through the discount sites. Thanks for sharing this!

Indeed a great post. Some seniors that I know, hire house-sitters (like baby sitting, but for the house, just at nights) to make the house look occupied and to clear up those deliveries so it doesn’t get targeted by burglars. And yeah, very recently I booked a ticket for my mom and learnt that her prices are almost half as mine! Haha…

Being a senior citizen should not be a hindrance to travel to places you dream of. If I get to be at that age and find myself visiting a foreign country, I would opt to use public transport to go places. I will leave the driving to someone else.

Sending this to my parents. I like the tip about securing your house, especially to stop any deliveries because a pile of stacked stuff can tip off burglars. Also, I always help me parents secure good prices from tours and experiences because of the special discount they have for senior travellers. Not sure they’d like to go through the hassle of contacting hotels directly for the best rates, I believe most 3rd party websites do offer best online rates anyway, maybe I am wrong?

My experience is definitely that direct booking through the airlines can be cheaper. Signing up for their newsletters is a good tip to be able to quickly react when they offer time limited discounts. Same goes for car rentals as well.

Great tips! Senior Citizens in Australia get taken care of very well so there are certainly discounts and cheaper fares to be had. Apart from using Senior Citizen cards, the rest of the tips are also relevant to all travellers, regardless of age or type of traveller. Securing the home part is so true. I live a property with other townhouses so I always let them know I am going away so they can keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
