How to Store Camping Gear

Store camping gear 1

By Whitney Klenzendorf

Sometimes it can feel like the majority of a camping trip is spent packing, unpacking, and locating equipment. This is a situation which sometimes drives me slightly insane. And everyone seems to store camping gear differently. So to combat this insanity I’ve developed a pretty efficient system of storage. A system which prevents me from EVER having to pack for a camping trip!

Here, I’ll share with you the magic system.

Store Camping Gear easily and efficiently

And the fun part: you get to use a labelmaker!

I bought three bins of equal size and separated my camping gear into them according to various categories.

This does involve having two sets of certain things, one for home and one for camping, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Bin 1:

Food prep in one bin: spatulas, measuring spoons, bowls, oven mitts, forks, etc.

Cleaning equipment and random tools go in the next bin. This includes hand soap, dish soap, dish towel, paper towels, small broom and dustpan, scissors, multiplugs, etc.

Grilling/coffee tools in the third bin.

Summing up storing camping gear:

Of course you can divide your gear however you like. You don’t have to follow these categories but separating what you plan to take into bins is practical.

I bought the bin sizes that would fit in my guest closet, and I keep them stacked there when not using.

Obviously the size of the bins and the amount that goes into them can depend on the number of people camping. The type of camping may also have a bearing on this. You may wish to store more stuff rather than less to save packing time in whatever situation.

Having and using this simple system makes my life SO much easier.

When I want to go camping, I can just throw the bins in the car, without having to repack them each time.

After a trip, I make sure they are restocked/cleaned as needed. I took these bins on a recent camping trip to Inks Lake and couldn’t help but wonder why I didn’t do it sooner.

I have a habit of organizing my stuff in boxes and labelling them with a label maker too, haha. I do that usually with all my spices and seasonings and I love using the label maker too 😀 I can totally relate to organizing camping gear in a similar manner.

Making neat boxes really helps and this shows in the post too. So many times, things just get messed up because we do not pack well or we are not able to find something important. But this post was really helpful. I am sure it inspires us all to organize our travel gears properly. With camping, it is a must. Storage bins are so so essential and useful…

This is such a neat idea! Whenever I go camping (I must admit it has been a while), everything is always a mess! I usually pack in backpacks/duffel bags and always have a hard time finding what I’m looking for. I will definitely give this idea a try the next time I go camping. They would fit perfectly in the trunk and be so much easier to access than what I’ve been doing. I may even do this for road trips to! I don’t mind the idea of having two sets of some of the things, it would mean that it was ready to go without a lot of effort with packing!

I am not quite a camper – but these are definitely good tips for storage as well. Putting things in order always makes it easier to find again. Thanks for the tips.

I always wondered how the regular campers keep their equipment. There is so much to keep around. But this is super handy. In fact, I am gonna take a cue from it and keep some of my travel essentials like this and even, some of my sports stuff. Much more organized

Having separate bins is such a brilliant idea for moving and storage. I often find myself packing and repacking the same things when traveling in general – I can’t imagine what that would be like for camping. It’s a great idea!

Keeping camping gear in separate bins by purpose sounds like a good idea. That way, you may easily be able to use some bins at other times e.g. the cooking bin for a picnic. We have lists for everything. But sometimes it is just easier to store things together. Although that might mean duplicates for some things for us!

Those storage bins are essential. There’s so much organization to do when you’re camping and the worst thing is digging around looking for things especially when it’s time to eat. I think to get the most enjoyment out of camping You have to see organization as part of the adventure so that unpacking and packing at the end of your trip is stress-free and enjoyable

I like this as a reminder. I organize camping trips for 15 to 30 people at a time and it does help to be organized. Useful tips on the bins. Right now, I only have one bin but using a couple more to organize the rest seems the way to go.

I have a system like this too – three bins – one for cooking stuff, one for car camping, and one for backpacking. I need a bigger closet, though.
